Specialist International Trade Adviser (Transport)

£39,000 - £42,000 pa (DOE) with excellent benefits, field based - East Midlands

We are currently looking for a Specialist International Trade Adviser who has wide-ranging, senior level experience in International trade and Transport and Equipment Manufacturing particularly rail.

The role will be home/field based covering the East Midlands area, so a Full UK driving licence and access to own transport is essential.

In this role build effective, long-term relationships with business owners and leaders to support the development of their international business strategy through information, advice and access to DIT’s full range of products and services, thereby contributing to an agreed numeric, financial and quality targets.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Identify international opportunities, trade shows and exhibitions that of interest to the rail and transport equipment manufacturing sector and promote them to businesses.

• Plan and lead on market visits to these shows and exhibitions including recruitment of companies who would benefit and in addition develop Meet the Buyer opportunities which may take place in the UK and overseas.

• Primarily through face to face meetings, assist companies to develop appropriate international trade strategies and action plans by providing advice which supports businesses to grow their export revenue and increase their profitability by making best use of the full range of DIT and ERDF funded services and other provision that may be available from the private sector.

• Manage client progress through regular account management contact which captures of activities undertaken and evidence of business won.

• Keep abreast of the support available to SMEs from sector-related organisations and membership networks both in the region and nationally and communicate this to clients via regular digital news bulletins.

• Represent DIT on the Rail Forum East Midlands (RFEM) Executive Board and in conjunction with RFEM members and other Rail-sector organisations develop of events and initiatives to support the export agenda

• Assist the Regional Director (who is the national sector lead for rail) to develop a sector strategy.

• Maintain and develop sector/market contacts located at the centre or in the DIT overseas network and where appropriate, develop contacts with the rail industry in market

• Act as the regional representative, and with the prior agreement of the line manager, attend sector-related national meetings and events.

• Network effectively with colleagues in different adviser teams, Sector Teams, Chambers and other partners in the region to maximise benefit to customers and generate referrals between partners.

The role may involve other duties as required; this could include accompanying customers on organised market visits overseas.

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Sound sector understanding and contacts

• Sound general knowledge of international trade including the mechanics of exporting

• Sound business awareness including company finance and structure

• Sound general understanding of issues affecting the UK economy; specifically their impact on companies engaged in exporting

• Understanding of other services offered by local and international providers in international trade

• Knowledge of the local economy

• Well-developed advisory and presentation skills; skills in relationship building

• Ability to ‘close a deal’ through good influencing and facilitation skills

• Ability to travel across the Midlands Engine area in order to engage with businesses

Desirable:

• Educated to degree level or equivalent

• Experience of working in business support environment • Experience of development of international trade

• Commercial awareness of innovative, technology based companies

• Practical experience of exporting in a commercial environment

• Knowledge of DIT services

• Language skills
